Where I Stand - Schools, Safety and our Roadways
Our public schools are at the center of the social life of every county in the 10th Senatorial District. The safety of our communities—from violent crime, but from petty crime, too—is of paramount importance to all of us. And maintaining safe—and ever-improved—roadways is crucial to ensuring economic vitality.
Those are the core obligations of government upon which I will focus if you nominate and elect me to serve as your next State Senator.
We all know the strengths and weaknesses of public education. But we know, too, that providing a quality public education for our children is not only our fondest hope but our fundamental obligation under the Constitution of Virginia. So, ensuring high academic standards for our teachers, and for our children whom they teach, will be my top priority. For parents who prefer a private schooling for their children, I will support Virginia's Education Improvement Scholarships Tax Credits Program (EISTC). This program is as close to a vouchers system as we can hope to achieve in Virginia anytime soon. And for thousands of Virginian families, the tax credits—initiated in 2012—have made private learning possible—without negatively impacting state support for our public schools.
Already I have endorsements from sheriffs of two of our largest counties. I will be an advocate for local law-enforcement, but I will advocate, too, for our State Police. Statewide, we have 351 fewer troopers than we need—and for which funding is available. I want to be part of the solution in filling those positions.
Routes 60, 6, 460, 360, 15, and of course the Interstate system: these roadways are how we get to and from work, church, school, the store, and our friends. If a major landfill becomes a reality in eastern Cumberland, I will work tirelessly to ensure that VDOT improves the affected highways to protect us all in our travels.
Nothing much can be accomplished by an individual working alone. Therefore, I pledge to you to cooperate with our locally elected officials, and with my fellow Republicans in the Senate, to improve our schools, our public safety, and our public transportation systems—and to help govern well every responsibility of the Commonwealth. And I will make it a priority, every day, to answer your calls and emails, and help you navigate the agencies of our state government—the DMV, for example. I will be you voice in Richmond, but I will also be your helping hand.
